Dr Norman Nieder-Heitmann is a dynamic ophthalmologist, cataract and vitreoretinal surgeon with a passion for delivering eye care services of the highest quality to the community of Paarl and surrounding areas.
He completed his undergraduate medical training in 2007 at the University of Stellenbosch. In 2012, after working in general medicine for 5 years, his ophthalmology career started in Witsieshoek, a rural town in the Eastern Free State. Under the close guidance of Dr Corne Gouws, a consultant ophthalmologist, he was amongst others trained to perform cataract surgery. During this period he completed his Diploma in Ophthalmology through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
He went on to complete his four years of specialist training at Groote Schuur Academic Hospital through the University of Cape Town. For his outstanding performance during the 2018 final exam, he received the Justin van Selm medal, a prestigious annual award bestowed by Colleges of Medicine of South Africa on to the highest achieving candidate in the country.
After completing his general ophthalmology training, Dr Nieder-Heitmann was offered an opportunity to do an additional year of formal vitreoretinal training at Groote Schuur Academic Hospital’s retinal unit. During this fellowship, he received comprehensive training in managing all aspects of medical and surgical retinal conditions from various vitreoretinal consultants. He complimented this by attending an international retinal training course in Europe (Thessaloniki Vitreoretinal Summer School).
In 2019 he joined Dr Berry in private practice and together they expanded the practice to where it is today. He regularly attends both local and international academic congresses to ensure he stays abreast of all the latest advances in the fast evolving field of ophthalmology.
During his off time, Norman enjoys spending time with his wife Anina and two children, Katrien and Jannas. He’s passionate about the ocean and relishes surfing and spearfishing.
